SCHOOLHOUSE   PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA

A new LIBRARY AND CLASSROOM BUILDING FOR PLYMOUTH MEETING FRIENDS SCHOOL

Clad with a fiber cement rainscreen and sited within a historic district, the massing, scale, and color palette of the building compliment the existing 200-year-old campus. The ground floor houses two primary school classrooms which open onto a shared outdoor learning terrace. The school library occupies the second floor with spaces for independent study, comfortable nooks for reading, and a group collaboration room. Interior finishes are sustainable and non-emitting. Large, operable south-facing windows with cedar trellises provide daylighting, natural ventilation, and passive solar heating. Rain chains leading to bioretention areas divert most of the storm water from the building back into the ground.
